GPA re-iterates barrier support

The Gaelic Players' Association are fully in favour with the GAA's plans to make Croke Park a spectator free zone.

Barriers 2.8 metres in height have been erected at the Hill 16 end of Croke Park in a bid to stop supporters from running on to the playing area at the end of matches.

The GAA's previous attempts to stop pitch invasions have proven unsuccessful but it is hoped the fences will act as a deterrent it spectators in other areas of the stadium and the GPA has said that it is fully behind the move.

"While we understand that this represents a break with tradition, the GPA is happy to support the initiative as it is not acceptable that players should have to endure verbal abuse or physical interference after an intense championship game," the GPA said in a statement.

"We would also appeal to fans to consider losing players, particularly after this year's All-Ireland finals. The physical and emotional drain on players is immense. This is not a snub to patrons who support the games. Inter-county GAA players have enormous respect for their supporters."
