Hawk-Eye an option for GAA

by Setanta Staff , 02 September 2010

The GAA could get the opportunity to use Hawk-Eye technology for free if they so wish.

Calls for the use of technology have been growing after a summer that has seen several questionable scores awarded, while the Meath ‘goal’ in the Leinster SFC final against Louth and the ruling out of an Alan Smith point in Sunday’s All-Ireland SFC semi-final between Kildare and Down have been the most high-profile bad calls.

Certainly nothing is concrete yet, but the English-based Hawk-Eye company, whose products are currently being used in tennis’s US Open, did make a presentation to the GAA this week.

They say their services are perfect for making the type of controversies that have dogged this year’s action a thing of the past, and are even willing to provide the service for free if a sponsor can be found.

"We may offer the system for free if we are given the rights to exploit the commercial opportunities," Hawk-Eye's founder Dr Paul Hawkins was quoted as saying by hoganstand.com.

"These are early days. But we feel that this would be good news for the sport.

“This system works and it's instant - it wouldn't slow the game down and it would add to the drama.

"Our cameras would track the ball in real time and would probably be focused on the two goal areas. As soon as the ball crosses the goal line, the referee could be informed, we could virtually raise the posts up to decide on points and we could present technology for other decisions."

Kerry football manager Jack O'Connor, a man who has led his county to three All-Ireland titles, is in favour of the use of video technology. He recently said:

"There is no question in my mind but that it's a professional game played by amateurs and the preparation has to be professional.

"I can't see for the life of me why there can't be a referee who sits in a studio and can be in communication with the referee to tell him in 30 seconds. That would clear everything up."
