Luka Modric is set to miss Tottenham's Champions League Group A opener at Werder Bremen on Tuesday night.
Croatia midfielder Modric injured his led in Saturday's Premier League game at West Brom and is unlikely to start at the Weserstadion, though subsequent scans revealed that there is no break.
Captain Ledley King returns after being rested at the weekend, while goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini will continue to deputise for Heurelho Gomes, who has a groin injury.
Jermain Defoe and Michael Dawson are both out for several weeks with damaged ligaments Jamie O'Hara and Jonathan Woodgate are long-term absentees with back and groin problems respectively.
Werder Bremen's Claudio Pizarro is likely to miss the game with a muscle injury.
Pizarro missed the side's 0-0 Bundesliga draw against Bayern Munich on Saturday. "I do not think I will be able to play (against Spurs)," he said.
The former Chelsea striker pulled a thigh muscle during Bremen's 4-2 win over Cologne in late August, an injury that kept the 31-year-old out of Peru's internationals against Jamaica and Canada.
Bremen will also be missing injured central defenders Naldo and Per Mertesacker.
