Gers maintain win run with rout

by Setanta staff , 18 September 2010

Rangers continued their perfect Scottish Premier League record this season by seeing off Dundee United 4-0 at Ibrox on Saturday.

Fresh from their well-earned Champions League drawe at Manchester United in midweek, an early Sean Dillon own goal sent the defending champions on their way. Kenny Miller later bagged a second half brace and substitute Steven Naismith also got on the scoresheet for Walter Smith's men.

The opening goal at Ibrox came after just nine minutes. Steven Davis ran clear down the right after being released by Miller and sent in a cross looking for Nikica Jelavic. The big Croatian stumbled in his attempts to get to the ball, but Dillon, behind him, could only bundle it beyond Dusan Pernis and into his own net.

Allan McGregor saved low at the feet of Morgaro Gomis as United looked for an instant equaliser, but it was mainly the Gers on the attack, with on-loan Manchester City man Vladimir Weiss dragging a shot across goal and wide and Pernis then punching clear a dangerous Madjid Bougherra cross that was destined for the head of Jelavic.

The second half, however, saw the Gers get the kind of goal haul their dominance deserved. Jelavic could not help it as he failed to convert a triumvirate of chances to add to his first goal for the club against Hamilton a week ago, but - with 69 minutes gone – Miller did double their tally.

Jelavic was his supplier, the former Rapid Vienna man slipping the ball through into Miller’s path and the Scotland forward made no mistake as he lashed the ball beyond Pernis and home.

Naismith then came on for Maurice Edu and quickly added to the hosts’ tally as David Weir touched on a Weiss corner for the former Kilmarnock man to nod in at the back post.

Finally, Jelavic set Miller up again with eight minutes left, and the result was the same as the earlier goal as the latter forward applied a simple finish.
