Celtic see off Killie

by Dave Maher , 19 September 2010

Celtic kept pace with Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League thanks to a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Bhoys fell behind to Conor Sammon’s early penalty, but levelled through Daryl Murphy’s penalty, before Anthony Stokes' first Celtic goal ensured victory for the visitors.

Kilmarnock started in determined fashion and went ahead after just seven minutes, when Alexei Eremenko found Sammon, who came in from the left to curl a shot past Fraser Forster.

Forster narrowly beat Craig Bryson to a through ball soon afterwards, with Eremenko’s attempted lop from the rebound going too high.

Celtic, however, steadied, and grabbed an equaliser four minutes from the break, with Murphy coolly finishing from the spot after Frazer Wright had fouled Stokes.

The away side grabbed the lead after 52 minutes, as Stokes side-footed home from close range following Emilio Izaguirre’s cross.

Celtic dominated the remainder of the clash, with Stokes particularly lively, but were unable to add to their tally.

Nevertheless, the Bhoys lie deadlocked alongside Rangers at the top the table, with both Glasgow giants having acquired maximum points from their opening five matches.
