Mackie: Let's go for it

by Setanta staff , 09 October 2010

Scotland striker Jamie Mackie says the team must have all guns blazing when they face Spain on Tuesday.

QPR forward Mackie made his international bow as Craig Levein’s side went down 1-0 to the Czech Republic in Euro 2012 qualifying Group I on Friday. The defeat leaves them with just four points from three games and Mackie says they now have to go for it when the world and European champions visit Hampden Park this week.

Mackie hopes to keep his place for the game with Vicente Del Bosque’s men, and says he will play wherever he is told to after Scotland essentially played 4-6-0 in the disappointing loss in Prague.

"I'd be delighted if I played on Tuesday and, if I do, I'll play wherever I'm told to play,” the former Plymouth Argyle man was quoted as saying by the Press Association.

"Whoever I play against, I'm very confident in my own ability and I'll give anyone a game on my night.

"Hopefully I get the chance to show that. And hopefully we'll get a few more chances offensively.

"They are world champions and they merit respect but I think we've got to get at them and give it a real go this time.

"I would have loved a result for my first cap but it hasn't turned out that way and I'm very disappointed with the result in the end.

"I was delighted to get my first cap and I would have played in any role for the country. The players are there to do a job.

"You're playing for your country and you'll play wherever you're told to play. The manager selected a team and a formation and you've got to play to that.

"It's just unfortunate and very disappointing that we didn't get a result.

"The most disappointing thing was conceding from a set-piece after working so hard to stop them from scoring from open play.

"It would have been nice as a team to have had more chances but that's how we played."
