Uefa award qualifying win to Italy

by Setanta staff , 29 October 2010

Italy have been awarded a 3-0 victory over Serbia following the recent abandoned game between the two sides.

The October 12 Euro 2012 qualifier was abandoned after just seven minutes after a 35-minute delay, the reason being huge crowd trouble instigated by fans of the Serbian side. The Serbian team must also play their next two home games behind closed doors after the ugly scenes.

Travelling supporters threw flares onto the Italian pitch and were seen trying to smash perspex barriers and slice through protective nets.

On Friday, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said in a statement that Uefa have awarded them the 3-0 win and the three points, putting an end to any Serbian hopes for a replay, while Italy themselves have also received a suspended one-match stadium ban.

A statement from the governing said that Uefa had awarded: "a 3-0 victory in favour of Italy and two games behind closed doors for Serbia, of which one is conditional. Italy have been given a conditional one game behind closed doors.

"This is the decision of the disciplinary commission of Uefa which met today in Nyon, based on the abandonment of the game between Italy and Serbia on October 12 in Genoa following the crowd unrest by Serbian fans."

The awarded result will see Italy move on to ten points in Group C, three clear of Slovenia in second, while Serbia are second bottom with four points from four games.
