Tuesday's Champions League round-up

by Setanta staff , 02 November 2010

FC Twente remain in contention to get out of Champions League Group A after a 2-0 win away to Werder Bremen on Tuesday.

The Dutch champions were second best for much of the night in Germany, but the hosts had Torsten Frings sent off for foul and abusive language in the closing quarter. Thereafter, Nacer Chadli's deflected shot broke the deadlock and Luuk de Jong sealed a win to leave Twente on five points two behind Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan.

Group B saw a goalfest and a scoreless stalemate, the latter provided by Hapoel Tel Aviv and second-paced Schalke who drew 0-0 in Israel.

Therer was no such boredom in Portugal though where Fabio Coentrao scored twice as Benfica downed Lyon 4-3. The Portuguese World Cup full back added to efforts from Alen Kerdac and Javi Garcia as the home team went 4-0 up.

Yoann Gourcuff, substitute Bafetimbi Gomis and Dejan Lovren then all scored for Lyon but they could not complete the comeback. They still lead the group by two points from Schalke, with Benfica a further point back.

In Group D, Lionel Messi was on target, but his Barcelona side were held 1-1 in Denmark by FC Copenhagen thanks to a goal from Claudemir.

Rubin Kazan and Panathinaikos earlier played out a mediocre 0-0 draw.
The result leaves Rubin with three points and no wins from four games and the Greeks on just two.
