Jose Maria Olazabal is expected to be named the captain of the 2012 European Ryder Cup captain in January.
The Spaniard has been the overwhelming favourite to lead Europe at Medinah, near Chicago, following Colin Montgomerie's decision to step down following his winning turn as captain at Celtic Manor.
An announcement has been scheduled for Abu Dhabi on January 18, although there had been suggestions that this would be brought forward to before Christmas.
Olazabal pulled out of the running when favourite to succeed Nick Faldo, leaving the way clear for Montgomerie to take on the role.
Having masterminded a brilliant win over the Americans in Wales, Montgomerie confirmed his intention to pass on the baton with his Celtic Manor vice-captain installed as the favourite.
The 44-year-old, who was drafted in as one of Montgomerie's vice-captains at Celtic Manor when weather conditions meant a change to the schedule, has previously stated he would take on the job if his health allowed.
