Arsenal have been handed a Champions League last 16 tie with favourites Barcelona, while Tottenham Hotspur will take on AC Milan.
Friday’s draw in Switzerland, meanwhile, also saw Manchester United pulled out against Marseille, while Chelsea were given a rather favourable pairing with FC Copenhagen and there will be a repeat of last year’s final as Inter Milan will meet Bayern Munich.
The Gunners could only finish second in Group H, meaning that a meeting with Barca, who demolished them in the second leg of last year’s quarter-final, was always a possibility and the draw had seen all other potential opponents already paired off before Arsenal were pulled out of the bowl.
Like last season Arsenal will be at home first before they travel to Camp Nou, where Lionel Messi’s four-goal haul earned a 4-1 (6-3 on aggregate) win for Pep Guardiola’s team last year.
Tottenham Hotspur will face Serie A leaders and seven-time European Cup winners Milan in an exciting first jaunt into the last 16 for them. Harry Redknapp’s men were group winners so will play at the San Siro first before welcoming the Rossoneri to White Hart Lane for the second leg. Having already beaten Inter though, the trip to Italy is unlikely to frighten free-scoring Spurs.
Former Red Devils defender Gabriel Heinze will be among the opponents United will face when they travel to Stade Velodrome for their first leg, while Chelsea – the most-fancied of the English sides – will only see their odds shorten after drawing the rank outsiders, whos esquad includes ex-Blue Jesper Gronckjaer. Carlo Ancelotti's men too will be at home for the second leg.
Elsewhere, Inter, under Rafael Benitez, will need to fend off a revenge attempt from last May’s Bernabeu losers Bayern, while Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid will be favourites to get past Lyon.
Finally, Shakhtar Donetsk are at this stage for the first time and they were drawn to meet Roma, while Valencia will play Schalke.
