Everton ease Scunthorpe aside

by Setanta Staff , 08 January 2011

Everton eased into the fourth round of the FA Cup thanks to a 5-1 win away to Championship outfit Scunthorpe United on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Louis Saha and Jermain Beckford had Everton two-up at the break, scoring either side of a bad headed miss from the hosts’ Chris Dagnall, though Scunthorpe pulled one back through Michael Collins.

However, Seamus Coleman, Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines all scored to ensure comfortable progress for the 2009 beaten finalists.

The visitors took the lead inside the opening five minutes, with Saha making space before firing home from the edge of the box.

Everton looked to add to their advantage, as Beckford went close twice, before Marouane Fellaini blasted over when well-placed.

Beckford was then put through by Coleman but was denied by a good save from Joe Murphy, while Osman saw an effort from eight yards deflected narrowly wide.

However, Everton got their second after 33 minutes thanks to Beckford, who glanced a header past Murphy following an Osman cross.

Collins gave his side hope in the opening minute of the second half, powering onto a long ball from Josh Collins and smashing an effort past Tim Howard.

Scunthorpe suddenly looked threatening, but the Toffees regained a two-goal advantage before the hour-mark, as Beckford’s cross allowed Coleman to power a header home.

Everton hit their fourth on 73 minutes, with Fellaini striking a fine left-footed effort from the edge of the box.

The Toffees rubbed salt into Scunthorpe wounds 10 minutes later through Baines, who clipped home a neat finish following a pull-back from substitute Magaye Gueye.
