'Olly' hails 'proudest moment'

by setanta.com staff , 18 January 2011

Jose Maria Olazabal was delighted to be named as European Ryder Cup captain for 2012 as they attempt to retain the trophy in Chicago.

The 44-year-old succeeds Colin Montgomerie, who captained with skill and passion at Celtic Manor in October to bring the famous trophy back across the pond at the first attempt after Paul Azinger's America won it in 2008.

Olazabal is already a Ryder Cup legend, with seven appearances and just 10 losses in 31 matches, after making his debut on the victorious 1987 team.

The Spaniard will command instant respect due to a playing career that was cut short due to injury, but which included 23 tournament victories on the European Tour and another six stateside, with two victories at the Masters.

He was unveiled as the new captain on Tuessday and admitted his pride at being handed such a prestigious position.

"The two Masters wins at Augusta National are the highlight of my playing career," he said.

"But this is my proudest moment.

"Golf has been my life and representing Europe in the Ryder Cup has given me so much enjoyment. So to be named the European Ryder Cup captain is something very special and I am looking forward to the next 20 months before we reach Medinah."

It appears as though 'Olly' will face Davis Love III, as the 46-year-old looks set to be named as USA captain on Thursday.

"My relationship with Davis Love is excellent, and we have the respect of each other," he added.
