McCullum sends Black Caps through

by Setanta Staff , 13 March 2011

Brendon McCullum's 101 helped New Zealand defeat Canada by 97 runs to secure a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

McCullum and Ross Taylor, who hit 74 off 44 balls, played a key role in the Black Caps win, while James Franklin fired an impressive 31 from eight balls as the side struck 122 from the last 10 overs to reach 358-6.

Canada recovered after losing two quick wickets in their response with Ashish Bagai (84) and Jimmy Hansra (70) going on to post good scores.

However, the Canadians could only manage 261-9 in the Group A contest at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

"Our game-plan is to try and keep wickets in hand," said stand-in New Zealand captain Taylor.

"Our strength is our lower-order batting and the power that we have."

Canada's Bagai said: "It was decent play by the middle order again but we didn't push on and never looked like getting 360.

"It was nice to get runs but again we came up on the losing side. I think we lost it in the first half of the game."
