Rangers close the gap on Celtic

by Setanta Staff , 10 April 2011

Rangers jumped to within two points of leaders Celtic with a 1-0 win over Hamilton in the SPL on Sunday, Nikica Jelavic getting the goal.

The Accies are now marooned at the bottom of the table and in real danger of relegation.

They passed up the perfect chance to take the lead early in the first half, when Doughie Imrie was fouled by Steven Davis inside the Rangers' box. A penalty awarded, Imrie stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by Allen McGregor.

David Buchanan then missed another chance to give the home side the lead, before Tomas Cerny saved a point blank-range effort from Jelavic.

The Croatian was celebrating moments later, however, when he stepped up to curl a free-kick into the Hamilton net, following a foul by Alex Neil.

Hamilton had second half chances from Jim McAlister and James Chambers and really should have had a point from the game, as the best Rangers could manage was a tame effort from El-Hadji Diouf.
