Tottenham out of Champions League

by Tony Cuddihy , 13 April 2011

Real Madrid progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League after a 1-0 win over Tottenham at White Hart Lane, and a 5-0 win on aggregate.

Heurelho Gomes' horrendous mistake allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to score early in the second half and it was never going to be Spurs' night from that point onwards.

Tottenham enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, without ever really threatening.

Gareth Bale's free kick hit the wall on 14 minutes but better was to follow from the London side when Aaron Lennon skipped free of Alvaro Arbeloa.

His clever cutback found Roman Pavlyuchenko but the Russian's finish was awful, as he could only manage to sky the ball over Iker Casillas' net.

Two minutes later, Pavlyuchenko had a good call for a penalty turned down, but that was as good as it got for Tottenham.

Real, particularly Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil, were dominating possession without ever really threatening the goal of Heurelho Gomes.

The Spaniards were happy to let the game flow as long as no goals were conceded, and they took the lead in calamitous fashion five minutes into the second half.

Ronaldo unleashed a shot from distance straight at Gomes. The Brazilian should easily have collected the ball but spilled, his desperate attempt to stop it hitting the back of the net coming to nothing.

Kaka almost forced another mistake from the Tottenham 'keeper, but the midfielder's effort sailed past the post.

Jermain Defoe then wasted a fine chance for his side when he chose to shoot at Casillas from point blank, rather than finding the unmarked Michael Dawson.

Madrid would have been further ahead but for the woeful touch of Emmanuel Adebayor, unable to make any impression on the game, though they were able to stifle every single attacking instinct of Spurs and their talisman, Bale.

Rafael van der Vaart had one late chance that he curled just over the bar, but it was not to be Tottenham's night.
