Motherwell power into final

by Setanta staff , 16 April 2011

Motherwell eased to a 3-0 win over St Johnstone in Saturday's Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park.

Stephen Craigan, Jamie Murphy and John Sutton all scored as Stuart McCall's side booked a final date with either Aberdeen or Celtic, all three of their goals coming in the first half.

They needed Darren Randolph to ensure they did not make a terrible start though, the Well goalkeeper denying Danny Invincibile's early flick from Danny Grainger's free-kick.

However, the next attack saw McCall's men hit the front. Peter Enckelman made a mess of dealing with Tom Hateley's corner, allowing captain Craigan to fly in and nod the ball to the net.

Before long more it was 2-0 after the ball bounced favourably off of referee Iain Brines and fell for Murphy. The forward ran across the box, as Derek McInnes's defenders backed off, before firing a low shot in at the far post.

A couple of efforts from Murray Davidson failed to get the Perth side back into it and they were even further behind when Francis Jeffers nodded Randolph's long clearance into the path of Sutton, who powered in a tremendous volley from all of 35 yards.

The cracking goal maeans he has scored in every round of the competition this season and more importantly it had his side 3-0 up at the break.

No further goals came after the restart, though Randolph had to deny Davidson, and his late header hit the bar, as he and his side enjoyed no luck and added to their reputation as perennial semi-final losers..

The victors, meanwhile, can look forward to a first Scottish Cup final for 20 years.
