Bhoys stroll past Tangerines

by Sean Nolan , 01 May 2011

Celtic returned to within a point of Rangers courtesy of a 4-1 win over Dundee United at Parkhead.

Gary Hooper, Beram Kayal, Kris Commons and Daryll Murphy scored the goals as Neil Lennon’s men dominated this game from the start, with only a late Johnny Russell effort offering the Tangerines any consolation.

Celtic made three changes from the side that played Rangers last week with Anthony Stokes, James Forrest and Kris Commons in for Georgios Samaras, Ki Sung-yueng and the injured Joe Ledley.

Dundee, who have only beaten the Glasgow giants once in the last 12 years, were never really in the game and Celtic were unlucky not to take an early lead when Commons struck a post in the 15th minute.

The breakthrough came shortly though as Anthony Stokes found Hooper who slotted home his 19th of the season.

Stokes himself went close with a brilliant attempt minutes later and apart from a blocked shot by David Goodwillie, Dundee were offering little threat to Fraser Forster’s net.

In the second half Kayal doubled the Bhoys advantage with a stunning left-foot shot that gave Dusan Pernis no chance.

A rare Dundee foray into enemy territory saw Russell strike a post on the hour mark but Dundee improved as the game drew to a close.

However, an action-packed final five minutes put the game to bed for Celtic.

On 85 minutes, substitute Commons swept home from six yards, but Dundee got one back as Russell knocked in a Goodwille cross from close range in added time.

Murphy, another substitute, was determined to get in on the action and he beat three defenders before his classy finished wrapped the game up on a high for Celtic.
