Bhoys' Izaguirre honoured by peers

by JP Lonergan , 02 May 2011

Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre was named Scotland’s players' player of the year at Sunday’s awards ceremony in Glasgow.

The Honduran international attacking left back beat off competition from Bhoys striker Gary Hooper, Rangers midfielder Steven Naismith and Kilmarnock midfield man Alexei Eremenko to claim the Scottish PFA gong.

Izaguirre joined Celtic last August and has won many admirers in his first season in Scottish football, leading to the former Ipswich Town trialist being linked with some big Premier League clubs over the course of the season.

“Emilio has probably been the signing of the season and it's brilliant for him to win,” Celtic assistant manager Johan Mjallby said of his award.

"I think Emilio has every chance to be one of the best in the world

"He has been absolutely marvellous. He is maybe not the best left back in the world, but he is up there.

"I think this boy has every chance to be one of the best in the world."

Elsewhere at the awards Dundee United striker David Goodwillie was named young player of the year, while Raith Rovers' John McGlynn was the surprise choice for manager of the year, despite his side being pipped for promotion to the Premier League by Dunfermline Athletic.

Nikica Jelavic won the goal of the season award for the Rangers striker’s recent overhead kick against Aberdeen.
