Zidane to be Real’s new sports director

by Shane Keegan , 26 May 2011

Former French international Zinedine Zidane is to be appointed the new sports director at Real Madrid according to reports.

Zidane has been working as an advisor in regards to first team issues to the club’s president Florentino Perez since last November.

Perez announced yesterday that the club would be undergoing some managerial restructuring following the dismissal of former director general Jorge Valdano, who was constantly clashing with manager Jose Mourihno.

"There were two people with a strong sports character and the harmony that needs to exist was lacking. You were all witnesses of this over the past season. There was a clear dysfunction that needed to be resolved," said Perez.

The three time FIFA World Player of the Year is now the most likely candidate to be given the position.

The decision by Perez to restructure the way the club is run will give the club a more ‘English’ feel, offering more freedom to Mourihno with regards to decision making, something he has been demanding for quite a while.
