Barcelona outclass United at Wembley

by Tony Cuddihy , 28 May 2011

Lionel Messi was, once again, the star performer as he helped Barcelona to a 3-1 win over Manchester United in the Champions League final.

The Catalans were far superior to their Premier League opponents, beating them with a mix of brilliant passing and accomplished finishing.

Pedro opened the scoring mid-way through the first half, only to see his side's lead cut down by Wayne Rooney seven minutes later.

The two sides went in level but Barcelona were, effectively, the only side to emerge after the break as Messi and David Villa sealed manager Pep Guardiola's second Champions League win for Barcelona.

The first chance of the game, following a cagey opening, came on 15 minutes when Pedro volleyed wide from a Xavi pass. Villa followed that up with an effort that went inches past Edwin van der Sar's post.

United were being schooled and it was no surprise when Xavi's exquisite pass found Pedro, who coolly slotted home.

Seven minutes later, however, the match was level once more.

Rooney exchanged several one-twos before receiving the ball back from Ryan Giggs and curling the ball past Victor Valdes. A fine strike.

Messi almost made it 2-1 just before the break, passing to Villa, whose cross, in turn, just evaded the onrushing Argentine.

If Barcelona had the better of the first half, they dominated the second with intricate passing and steadfast defending. Giggs and Michael Carrick were being totally dominated by Xavi and Andres Iniesta, the latter feeding the ball to Messi.

Messi could not believe his luck as Patrice Evra backed off him, and his shot was too strong for the wrongfooted van der Sar as Barca went 2-1 up.

Barcelona's third, the goal that killed the game, was better again. Messi weaved into the box and his attempted cross eventually found its way to Villa, who lashed home, giving United's retiring 'keeper no chance.

Nani came on for the injured Fabio and saw one late effort fly past Valdes' post, but that was the closest United came to salvaging anything from the game.
