McShane to skipper Irish

by Dave Maher , 06 June 2011

Paul McShane will captain the Republic of Ireland in Tuesday's friendly encounter with Italy.

Regular skipper Robbie Keane has been released from the squad, leading manager Giovanni Trappatoni to install McShane as captain for the match in Liege.

Trappatoni has named an unconfirmed side, with Millwall goalkeeper David Forde set to earn a first start for his country.

Defender Darren O'Dea and midfielder Stephen Hunt are injury doubts for the game. The place of O'Dea, should he fail to prove his fitness, at centre back will go Stephen Kelly, whilst Liam Lawrence will play on the left side of midfield if Hunt is unable to play.

Republic of Ireland team to play Italy (Tuesday, 19.45): David Forde; Paul McShane, Sean St Ledger, Darren O'Dea or Stephen Kelly, Stephen Ward; Seamus Coleman, Keith Andrews, Kevin Foley, Stephen Hunt or Liam Lawrence; Andy Keogh, Shane Long.
