Johnston optimistic over Cavan’s future

by Shane Keegan , 09 June 2011

Cavan forward Seanie Johnston insists that it’s up to the players whether or not Cavan will be successful this year.

The Cavan senior team have not had the best run of form of late, but Johnston is hoping that the younger players coming through the ranks will be able to change their Ulster Senior Football Championship match against Donegal on Sunday.

“When people talk about Cavan football they’re inclined to say that Cavan have some good players but they don’t tend to produce it when it really matters,” said Johnston.

“Only the players are going to change that. No one else is going to come along with a magic wand and change it so it’s up to us to put in the hard work in training and hopefully produce it on match day.”

The Cavan U21 side have restored some hope to the county, after they went on to claim the Ulster Championship this year. They also got to the All-Ireland final, but lost to Galway by 10 points.

“They brought 20,000 to Croke Park and the buzz seems to be back in the county, which had dipped in the last few years because of results, so it is up to us to keep it up,” he continued.

There have also been some managerial changes at Cavan, with Val Andrews returning to coach Breffni once again, having previously led them to an Ulster final in 2001.

“It seems in the first year that managers have an immediate impact and then as the years go on it gets harder to listen to them,” added Johnston.

“If you’re looking to make an impact as a manager obviously it’s in your first year that you nearly have your best chance.”
