Mourinho appeals Uefa ban

by JP Lonergan , 10 June 2011

Real Madrid have appealed against the five-match ban dished out by Uefa to manager Jose Mourinho.

The suspension, one game of which has already been served, was imposed upon the colourful Portuguese boss after his post-match comments in the wake of Real’s 2-0 Champions League semi-final defeat at home to Barcelona in April.

Mourinho had been sent to the stand after raging vocally at the sending off of Real defender Pepe in the Bernabeu clash. His post-match tirade was in essence a conspiracy theory that Barca were favoured to win the game.

Since being hit with the ban, the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss has said he will appeal and that he will even go as far as the Court of Arbitration for Sport if he has to.

A statement on the Uefa website on Friday read: "Real Madrid have appealed against the disciplinary verdict handed down to Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho by the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body on 6 May, and relating to the Uefa Champions League semi-final first leg on 27 April.

"The appeal follows the sending by Uefa of the reasoned decision on 6 June."
