Fermanagh football captain Barry Owens has a made claims that some officials of the Fermanagh county board were hoping the team was going to lose to London last weekend in the All-Ireland Championship preliminary round qualifier.
Owens believes that there were officials in key GAA positions in the county who were eager to see the demise of their own football team in Ruislip.
“It is a sad taste of affairs when you have people in the county board hoping you are going to be beat,” said Owens in the Fermanagh Herald.
Following Fermanagh’s defeat last Saturday, Owens called on the county board to make a quick decision regarding John O’Neill’s position as manager.
“There will be plenty of talk as usual but I think whatever decision is made needs to be made quickly. The county board are planning a review and they should do it quickly. It is in everyone’s best interests to get everything sorted out as soon as possible.”
Owens believes that the blame for Saturday’s shock defeat should not rest on O’Neill’s shoulders however, but on the shoulders of the players.
“People are always quick to blame the management and I’m sure that they have lessons to learn but at the end of the day when the players go out and do the complete opposite to what they are told what can you do?”
