Sligo footballer Eamonn O’Hara may have played his last game for his county after he tore a cruciate knee ligament while playing for his club Tourlestrane last weekend.
The 35-year-old is the second longest serving inter-county footballer in the country, behind Meath’s Graham Geraghty, who has also been ruled out for the rest of the season due to an Achilles tendon injury.
O’Hara has had a number of injuries during the course of his career, including cruciate ligament damage in his other knee, and it is believed that this latest setback could be the final nail in the coffin.
“I spoke with him last night and he was very philosophical about it all, but I am sure he is shattered.. It would be very sad if he went out like that,” said Sligo county board chairman Cyril Feehily.
While the injury may mean the end of O’Hara’s playing days, Feehily is hopeful that the 2002 All-Star will remain involved with the GAA in some way.
“You really don't want to think about something like that - he's probably in enough trauma as it is. But I know for sure that he will not be lost to the GAA yet. He'll play a big part in the years to come at some level.”
