Waterford hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald has insisted that he is only focused on Waterford’s success in this Sunday’s Munster Championship final against Tipperary, despite him being linked with the now vacant Clare job.
Ger ‘Sparrow’ O’Loughlin recently resigned from the position, leaving the way open for Fitzgerald to take control of his native county’s hurling team. However, the former Clare goalkeeper has admitted that he hasn’t even thought about considering the position.
I couldn't even think about that," Fitzgerald said in the Irish Daily Star.
"I am with Waterford and I have a job to do. I am enjoying what I am doing at the moment. The Waterford county board gave me a one-year term last year - and I want to do my best with that.
"That's all that I am thinking about at the moment.
"'Sparrow' took on a tough job and I think he did a fair job. And the man who follows him will have a tough job too.
"That is still a very, very young team and people have to realise that success doesn't come automatically just because players did well at minor and under 21. 'Sparrow' probably know that he wouldn't win anything, but one important thing that he did was change the attitude in the panel - the complacency that was there is gone."
