England claim Sri Lanka scalp

by Setanta Staff , 09 July 2011

England survived a middle order fightback by Sri Lanka to win the one-day series 3-2, thanks to a 16-run victory at Old Trafford.

With the best-of-five series evenly poised, it was winner-takes-all in Manchester and it was the home side who got the rub of the green at the start of the day when they won the toss and chose to bat.

Captain Alistair Cook and Craig Kieswetter picked up from where they left off at Trent Bridge by motoring along at seven-per-over, before England were stopped in their tracks when they lost their two openers and Kevin Pietersen in a short space of time.

Eoin Morgan and Jonathan Trott managed to rescue the innings by putting together a partnership of 118 off 124 balls, as the home side managed 268-9 in their 50 overs.

In response, Sri Lanka struggled and fell to 29-3 before Kumar Sangakkara, Jeevan Mendis and Angelo Mathews began to turn the tide back in the World Cup finalists' favour.

However, when Mathews was bowled for 62 by Jade Dernbach, Sri Lanka's hopes were gone, with Derbach taking the final wicket with the next ball to secure a famous series win for England.
