McFadden gunning for revenge

by Shane Kennedy , 15 July 2011

Donegal forward Colm McFadden has revenge in his sights in this weekend’s Ulster senior football final against Derry in Clones.

He was 14 the last time Donegal faced Derry in the final and the memory of that defeat still pains him.

Joe Brolly was the Derry man that inflicted the heartache on a young McFadden then and McFadden is determined to exorcise the demons of that day, come Sunday.

He said: “I remember it well. I watched it at home in the sitting room and we were leading for most of the game and when Brolly got the goal at the end, I remember I ran straight down the hall and went outside and there was a bucket in front of me and I just booted it.”

The opportunity to take revenge is in no small part thanks to manager Jim McGuinness, McFadden’s brother-in-law.

He said: “He pushes us hard in training, makes us all work hard, work for one another.

“One of the things that he has done is build confidence within the team, both our own individual self-confidence and confidence in each other as well.

And with the memory of Joe Brolly’s goal still as clear today as it ever was, McFadden is determined not to miss this opportunity: “A wee bit more maturity comes in as well (with age). You do start to appreciate it and you do try to make the most of it.”
