Armagh end Micko's reign

by Setanta Staff , 16 July 2011

Armagh brought an end to Mick O'Dwyer's time in charge of Wicklow at Aughrim on Saturday evening as the Ulster kingpins ran out 2-9 to 0-10 winners over the Garden County in the All-Ireland SFC Round Two replay.

Jamie Clarke's two goals, either side of the half-time whistle, proved to be decisive and the Orchard men will now face provincial neighbours Tyrone in the next round.

Armagh's were well worth their win and indeed could have won by more had they not been so erring in front of goal - Paddy O'Rourke's charges hit 15 wides over the 70 minutes.

Clarke's first goal after 18 minutes was all that separated the sides at the break, with Tony Hannon, Paul Earls and Leighton Glynn leading the fight for the well-supported underdogs.

After the interval, Wicklow drew level thanks to the efforts of dual star Glynn in particular, but they were again put three points in arrears when Crossmaglen's Clarke, who impressed from start to finish, slipped through and found the net for a second time - this time it was to prove fatal for the hosts as they were unable to find the necessary scores to extend their run in this year's championship.

A well-struck free from a composed Aaron Kernan gave Armagh a four-point buffer with time ebbing away on Wicklow and it was the visitors who completed the scoring, substitute Gavin McParland splitting the posts late on.
