Seagulls must be perfect - Poyet

by Setanta Staff , 20 September 2011

Brighton manager Gus Poyet admits his side will need to play the 'perfect' game if they are to beat Liverpool in the Carling Cup.

The Seagulls, flying high in the npower Championship and unbeaten at their new Amex Stadium, got past top -flight opposition in Sunderland in the second round.

But Poyet knows his players face another step up in class against an Anfield outfit who see the competition as a realistic chance of lifting a trophy this season, not to mention one still smarting from a 4-0 defeat by Tottenham at the weekend.

"We need to be at the top of our game and be a bit lucky, and maybe if Liverpool aren't then we've got a chance," said Poyet.

"If both teams play at the same level Liverpool should win because they are quicker, stronger and better technically.

"We have to make sure we are better than them on the day and take our chances.

"You need practically the perfect game to beat them - but we are going to try."
