Des Newton is understood to have accepted an invitation from the Roscommon board to take over from Fergal O'Donnell as the county's football manager.
Newton, whose brother John also played with distinction for the men from west of the Shannon towards the end of the last century, is expected to be confirmed at next week's county board meeting.
A school principal based in west Dublin, Newton has been involved with Kilmacud Crokes in recent years and served as a selector under manager Paddy Carr this year.
Newton, who hails from the northern end of the county and was originally attached to the Shannon Gaels club, had previously been based in Donegal where he built up extensive experience with development squads.
Meanwhile, former star forward Nigel Dineen has already been installed as Roscommon's new U21 boss in succession to Jimmy Gacquin for the coming year.
