Edwards agrees Wales deal

by Setanta Staff , 14 November 2011

Shaun Edwards has ended speculation about his future by signing a new four-year contract to stay as the Wales defensive coach.

The 45-year-old had hinted after the World Cup that he was keen to take on a new challenge, leading to speculation that he could join up with the RFU as part of the England set-up.

However, with no end in sight to the chaos that is engulfing Twickenham, Edwards has decided to continue his partnership with Wales head coach Warren Gatland.

"I kept in touch with him daily... and concluded matters positively on Saturday," WRU chief Roger Lewis told the BBC.

"I'm delighted for Welsh rugby, I'm delighted for the team of coaches we've got and I'm delighted for Shaun."

Having left his role as Wasps head coach in November Edwards has the option to take on a role as a defensive coach with a Premiership or RaboDirect PRO12 side, with Leicester Tigers, Bath and Cardiff Blues all reportedly interested in him.

With Wales his main employer now, any extra work he picks up at club level will take a back seat to his WRU duties.
