Jagielka released by England

by JP Lonergan , 14 November 2011

Everton’s Phil Jagielka is out of England's friendly against Sweden on Tuesday.

The central defender, who did well alongside former Toffees colleague Joleon Lescott at the heart of the England defence in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Spain, was released from the squad and allowed to return to his club.

Jagielka faced the world and European champions with a toe injury, and will now be given time to recuperate before his club side take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Football Association, however, have stressed that the player did not aggravate the problem while on international duty.

Captain John Terry is set to come back into the side in place of Jagielka, while his Chelsea team-mate Daniel Sturridge has been earmarked for a first England start. Tottenham Hotspur full back Kyle Walker and Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell, who made their debuts as subs against the Spaniards, are also set for the same honour.

Gary Cahill of Bolton will likely join Terry in place of Lescott, with Bursaspor goalkeeper Scott Carson apparently veing considered for a first cap in three years. Carson is back in contention as manager Fabio Capello has a dearth of available back-up to undisputed number one Joe Hart.

Capello warned those who think, that after beating Spain, Sweden will be easily disposed of. England have not beaten the Swedes in 12 games, with the Italian coach quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "They are really good and play in a very organised way. Everybody knows what they need to do in every moment of the game.

"It is a little country with a small population but it's always difficult to beat Sweden.

"(Zlatan) Ibrahimovic (who Capello previously signed for Juventus) is a really good player who can decide a top-level game in a single moment.

"I bought him as Juventus manager and for this reason I know how important he is for Sweden and what a real danger he is for every opponent."
