England friendly unlikely this season

by Michelle Fortune , 13 December 2011

The Republic of Ireland's proposed friendly against England is unlikely to go ahead prior to Euro 2012.

The Football Association of Ireland have made no secret of their desire to arrange a friendly with England after the last match between the sides was abandoned after 27 minutes due to crowd trouble.

It had been suggested the proposed friendly would take place in May but given the fact that the teams could meet in the quarter-finals of the European Championships, FAI chief executive John Delaney admits that the FA are reluctant to travel to Dublin ahead of the finals.

However, he has confirmed the FA are keen for the friendly to go home at a later date and he has hinted that the meeting could take place at the Aviva Stadium in November.

"The England game is looking less likely for May," Delaney told Sunshine FM.

"The fact from the English perspective that we could play them in the quarter-finals....they're not  that keen to do it in May, but they're keen to come sooner rather than later after that.

"But it's highly unlikely that it would be May now."
