Trapattoni warns Gibson

by Michelle Fortune , 20 December 2011

Darron Gibson is facing the possibility of missing out on Euro 2012 if he does not move away from Manchester United in January.

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has previously warned Gibson that he should leave Old Trafford for the sake of his career and the Italian has reiterated his belief that the Derryman would be better off finding a new club.

Gibson was linked with Sunderland in the summer but, while John O'Shea and Wes Brown signed for the Black Cats, the 24-year-old remained at Old Trafford. However, a number of injury problems have restricted his involvement and Trapattoni has warned that it will be in Gibson's best interests to seek a new club when the transfer window opens in January.

"I know the way he thinks and this is his intention, I know he wishes to go for this situation but it depends on what agents and his manager will say," Trapattoni said.

"Gibson has great vision and he shoots very well. but in the Wolves game, Manchester United won 4-1 and he was on the bench so it is hard for him."

Although Gibson is still in Trapattoni's plans, the Italian admit that he will find it hard to select him for next summer's European Championships is he does not start playing more regularly.

"It is a problem now that he stays on the bench. In one month it is very difficult to recover your condition," he added in the Irish Daily Mirror.
