Time to look to future - Hape

by Setanat staff , 23 December 2011

England centre Shontayne Hape has suggested that his time in the international game has come to an end with a new coach coming in.

The 30-year-old is not retiring from Test rugby but expects the new England hierarchy to start building for the future.

The New Zealand-born star helped secure England's first RBS 6 Nations title for eight years but only made one appearance in what turned out to be a disappointing World Cup, with England still dealing with the repercussions.

Stuart Lancaster has been brought in to succeed Martin Johnson on an interim basis and he will name a 32-man squad on January 11 for the 6 Nations.

Hape will still be available for selection but he has admitted that the time is right to look to the future.

"I won the 6 Nations, which was a treat, and I think it is time the young guys experienced that," Hape said.

"It is time to start rebuilding for the next World Cup. You have to start looking at the new breed coming through.

"The only way they learn is if you play them. I am a big believer in chucking young players in there to see what they can do.

"I wouldn't say no if I was selected, but I wouldn't be hanging my hat on it."
