McClaren sacked by Wolfsburg

by Tony Cuddihy , 07 February 2011

Steve McClaren has been sacked by German side Wolfsburg with the Bundesliga outfit just one point above the relegation zone.

The former England coach arrived at the Volkswagen Arena in May after steering Dutch side FC Twente to the title last season but failed to inspire his charges and has paid the price with his job.

The 49-year-old made his name as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United before taking Middlesbrough to the Uefa Cup final during his five years in charge at the Riverside.

The former Hull City defender than took charge of the England side but failure to qualify for Euro 2008 saw him sacked after less than two years in charge.

He rebuilt his reputation with FC Twente, before accepting the challenging of managing in the German top flight, but is now out of work after a below-par season to date for Die Wolfe.

The club's director of sport Dieter Hoeness explained the reasons for parting company with their manager.

"We were no longer sure that we could work with Steve McClaren until the end of the season with some stability," he said. "We have tried to make things work for as long as possible, but we have lost faith that we can bring success."
