Rangers crush Motherwell

by Kieran O'Daly , 02 January 2012

Rangers scored a convincing 3-0 victory over Motherwell in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League and put thoughts of their Old Firm derby defeat firmly in the past.

Rangers were missing top scorer Nikica Jelavic but were more than good value for their win over a Motherwell side whose bright start to the campaign is fast becoming just a distant memory. The only disappointment for the home side came when Kyle Lafferty pulled up chasing a long ball and had to leave the field on a stretcher after just nine minutes.

Rangers created plenty of chances in a lively opening half, with Healy and Davis going close before the former Sunderland and Leeds man broke the deadlock on 35 minutes, collecting an Edu pass before turning and firing in from six yards for his first goal of the season. It was no more than the home side deserved as Motherwell struggled to get out of their own half.

Rangers continued to press and Randolph had to save smartly from Wallace at the back post early in the second period. Tom Hateley then came to the rescue to clear a Carlos Bocanegra header off the line after the American connected with an Aluko corner. But a second for Rangers looked inevitable and it duly arrived on 55 minutes when Aluko slammed home after good work by Healy to score his first goal for the club.

The home side sealed their victory on 73 minutes when a Wallace shot was deflected into the back of his own net by the hapless Craigan.
