Horan: Let sleeping dogs lie

by JP Lonergan , 06 January 2012

Mayo senior football manager James Horan says that there is no need to make wholesale changes to the current format of the All-Ireland SFC.

Some counties are unhappy with the current system, which sees a heavy schedule of qualifiers in late June and July, and there have even once again been calls to scrap the provincial championships.

However, Horan – who led the Westerners to the Connacht title and an All-Ireland semi-final in 2011 – says, if it is not broke, do not fix it.

"A Connacht medal is very special to players and it’s always nice to win your provincial championship," the Mayo boss was quoted as saying in the Irish Examiner.

"The Connacht final is a big day and we found out a lot about ourselves in last year’s final against Roscommon. There’s a great tradition around the Connacht championship and it has been very good to us in Mayo over the years.

“I’m in favour of keeping the current system. It may need a bit of tweaking but that’s easily done.

"The new system would probably be more consistent and competitive. There would be more games and it’d be easier to plan for the entire season.

"It would also end the problems of some losing provincial finalists having to play six or seven days after being beaten in their own province, but I don’t think it’d be for me."
