Hughes banned for a month

by JP Lonergan , 06 January 2012

Jockey Richard Hughes has been hit with a month-long ban after being found guilty of 'foul riding' in India.

It has been ruled that Hughes elbowed a rival after being interfered with, while aboard Star Trainer in a seven-furlong heat in Mumbai.

Richard Hannon's stable jockey saw his mount, who had finished second, disqualified and he has now been hit with the four-week penalty.

Hughes’ defence was that he was merely defending himself, however, he will now miss nine meetings in Mumbai with his ban due to kick off on January 22.

An unhappy Hughes tweeted after receiving the verdict: "Just got a month ban in India for self defence they say I should have taken a check rather than hold my position, barmy."

The jockey, however, should firmly be back in the saddle to ride Dubawi Gold for Hannonat March’s Dubai Carnival.
