Oozthuizen doubles up in Africa

by Oli Skehan , 08 January 2012

Pre-tournament favourite Lous Oosthuizen saw off the determined challenge of fellow South African Tjaart van der Walt to win the Africa Open for the second successive year.

The former Open champion finished on 27-under par in a round that included an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys, a couple of shots ahead of van der Walt who started the final day impressively with birdies in his first three holes.

Two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen, finished in third place after a 69, three shots off the lead on 24-under.

"My birdie at 17 and the bogey of Tjaart made the difference," Oosthuizen said.

"I am very pleased to win after trading blows with my closest challenger for so much of the final round.

"Tjaart did not go away despite my efforts to move clear. He matched me shot for shot, birdie for birdie, par for par, and can be really proud of his performance.

"That breeze was a test after three rounds played in perfect conditions, but I was disappointed to let birdie chances slip at 15 and 16."

A fourth South African, Jaco van Zyl, finished fourth on 23-under par, while Scotland's Alastair Forsyth was fifth, one shot further back after a fine closing round of 67.
