Morison pounces to beat Baggies

by Setanta staff , 14 January 2012

Norwich City made it back-to-back away wins in the Premier League, thanks to Steve Morison’s late goal at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Paul Lambert’s side won 2-1 at the Hawthorns, with Andrew Surman having put them ahead before Albion substitute Shane Long netted from the penalty spot.

Peter Odemwingie went close to giving West Brom a flying start when he took the ball down on his chest some 25 yards out and let fly, but the returning John Ruddy in the Norwich goal tipped the effort onto his bar and he and his team survived.

Norwich also hit the woodwork, though Morison did not know too much about it when a scramble in the Baggies area saw the ball bounce off him and roll against the outside of Ben Foster’s post.

Odemwingie and Simeon Jackson then traded efforts before Ruddy denied last week’s Baggies hat-trick hero Simon Cox, while James Morrison was then foiled by a goal-line clearance from Surman.

And it was Surman who gave his side a half-time lead when – two minutes before the break – he brilliantly met Wes Hoolahan's cross with a thumping volley that will give Canaries fans of a certain generation memories of a legendary strike in Europe from one Jeremy Goss.

Morrison and Paul Scharner failed with efforts to get Roy Hodgson’s men back level after the break with both shooting over Ruddy’s bar, though the former soon went closer with a dipping effort but not close enough.

Long then replaced Odemwingie and drew a save out of Ruddy, before feeding Cox who did likewise as Norwich held on to their lead.

They would lose it in the 68th minute, however, when Daniel Ayala’s wild challenge on Jerome Thomas led to referee Mike Dean awarding a penalty. Long stepped up and sent a cool effort home to the delight of the home fans.

However, there was a twist in the tale and, with 11 minutes left, Norwich capitalised when Youssouf Mulumbu lost possession. Canaries sub Grant Holt fired in a cross from the left after a run, and Morison beat Foster with a powerful header to take his side onto a hugely impressive 28 points from 21 games.
