Kavanagh undecided on 2012

by JP Lonergan , 22 January 2012

Kilkenny defender Michael Kavanagh has not yet decided if he will follow some of his team-mates into retirement.

The long-serving Cats stalwart has already seen James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick, Eddie Brennan and goalkeeper PJ Ryan take their leave from Brian Cody's squad, and all eyes are now on him to see if he will follow suit.

However, Kilkenny County Board secretary Ned Quinn says that the St Lachtain's player has not yet made any decision about 2012, saying in the Irish Independent: "There's no official word from Michael yet. And we won't be pushing him either. Michael will make up his own mind in his own time."

The 32-year-old Kavanagh has eight All-Ireland medals and four All Star awards, along with 13 Leinster crowns and five National Hurling League titles.
It was previously wrongly reported that Kavanagh had called time on his Kilkenny days after they lost the 2010 All-Ireland final to Tipperary.

However, he remained with the panel, albeit if he had to sit on and watch in 2011 as Paul Murphy made the Cats’ right corner back position his own.

Meanwhile, John McGrath and Jim O'Connor, former selectors under Dick Mullins, will jointly manage the Kilkenny senior football team in 2012 as they complete in Division Four of the Allianz Football League.
