Dalglish lavishes praise on players

by Setanta Staff , 28 January 2012

Kenny Dalglish praised Liverpool's "fantastic effort" following their 2-1 FA Cup fourth round win against Manchester United on Saturday.

The Reds chief watched as his side squandered a one-goal lead handed to them by Daniel Agger's header when Park Ji-Sung equalised for United before the interval.

However, Dirk Kuyt fired in the winner with two minutes of normal time remaining to send the Merseysiders into the fifth round of the cup.

Afterwards, Dalglish, who watched his side defeat Manchester City in their Carling Cup semi-final clash in midweek, said: "It was a fantastic effort from our players after what they had to get through on Wednesday night.

"To ask them to come back and play again on Saturday morning was pushing it a bit too far.

"Their commitment, attitude and desire to get a result was fantastic and we cannot speak highly enough of them after that performance and result today."

With regards to fears over how the fans of both clubs would behave in light of the league clash in October which resulted in Luis Suarez being banned for eight matches for racially abusing Patrice Evra, Dalglish was quick to hail the behaviour of the Reds' and United's supporters.

"I think both sets of fans were a magnificent advert for their clubs," he added.

"Both clubs can be very proud of the fans they have here. There was a good bit banter between both fans, which is brilliant because you don't want to take that away.

"I think in the main they were fantastic and the players were a credit to that because none of them tried to do anything other than play football.

"They (United fans) will be disappointed at losing but they deserve credit for contributing to the occasion.

"That is what the players did and the fans did; the fans are entitled to support their team, absolutely no problem.

"I don't think there was anything there that was untowards."
