Coyle stands firm on Davies

by Setanta Staff , 29 January 2012 Coyle stands firm on Davies

Bolton boss Owen Coyle has confirmed Sunderland have enquired about Kevin Davies but he has no plans to sell the veteran striker.

Davies is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a January exit after falling out of favour of late at the Reebok.

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill hinted earlier in the week that he is on the lookout for an experienced frontman after seeing injuries hit his side in recent weeks.

However, Sunderland are thought to be keen on a loan move and Bolton will not consider allowing Davies to leave on loan.

Coyle has confirmed O'Neill has spoken to him about Davies, but no firm bid has been made and the Bolton boss insists the striker remains a key member of his squad.

"The skipper got a wonderful reception (against Swansea) because he is an outstanding player," said the Wanderers boss.

"I can understand why there is interest in him. Martin rang me and I told him Kevin has a big part to play and I don't want him going anywhere.

But you can't stop clubs enquiring, I do that myself. There is no offer. I think he loves the football club and he's shown that.

"He's been a credit to himself and us. But it's not easy when you are not in the starting line-up."

Coyle has confirmed his interest in Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.

Speaking after Bolton's 2-1 FA Cup win over Swansea City on Saturday, Coyle said that the 19-year-old could improve his squad.

"I think there's players out there, and Zaha is certainly one of them, that I think would enhance our club for years to come on a permanent basis, and there are one or two on a loan capacity I'd love to bring in before the deadline on Tuesday," said Coyle.

"If it transpires then great, but it won't stop me targeting good, young players to bring to this football club that I think I can develop and make better, and that's what I'm trying to do."
