Hughes ends inter-county career

by Michelle Fortune , 31 January 2012

Kevin Hughes has joined the growing number of Tyrone veterans to call time on his inter-county career.

Hughes has been a member of the Tyrone senior football panel for 15 years and during his time with the Red Hand won every honour in the game.

He was named man of the match in the 2003 All-Ireland SFC final success over Armagh and after missing the 2005 success - he was away travelling - he returned to the panel to win his second All-Ireland medal in 2008.

"It’s very disappointing when someone of the calibre of Kevin Hughes decides to hang up the boots," said Tyrone County Board chairman Ciaran McLaughlin

"In some ways it is understandable after all of the work that men like ‘Hub’ have put in over the years.

"He has been a huge part of delivering two of our three All-Ireland senior wins, in 2003 and 2008, as well as numerous Ulster and All Ireland underage medals and everyone in Tyrone thanks him for the service that he gave and wish him well in his retirement.

"Mickey Harte is in the process of trying to replace legends at the minute and the McKenna Cup win on Saturday is evidence of the fact that there’s plenty of talent still around."

Hughes has become the latest in a long line of Tyrone veterans to retire from the inter-county scene with Brian Dooher, Philip Jordan, Enda McGinley, Brian McGuigan and Ciaran Gourley having also recently retired.

Jordan paid tribute to Hughes on hearing the news, saying: "Hearing Hub has hung up the boots. A great career, saved his best for the big days - '03 and '08 finals. On top of that, a great fellow."
