Murray to miss Davis Cup test

by Setanta Staff , 31 January 2012

The Lawn Tennis Association has confirmed that Andy Murray will miss Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against the Slovak Republic.

The British number one was not included in captain Leon Smith's team announcement earlier on Tuesday with the LTA later releasing a statement to say Murray had been advised not to play on "medical grounds".

It is claimed the 24-year-old Scot had picked up several niggling injuries on his way to the semi-finals of the recent Australian Open.

Murray said: "I'm gutted to miss out on the Davis Cup having really enjoyed playing last year, but as it's only the start of an important season, which includes the Olympics in London, it's probably a sensible decision."

Despite Murray's omission from the Great Britain squad for the Euro-Africa Zone Group I clash, Smith is confident of securing a positive result with British number two James Ward and Dan Evans set to play in the singles and the established doubles pairing of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins making up the four-man team at Glasgow's Braehead Arena from February 10-12.

He said: "This is a real step up in standard for the team and we go into the tie knowing the Slovak Republic will be favourites.

"But I am confident the boys will see this as a great chance to put everything into representing their country, and that with the backing of a fantastic set of home fans, we can upset the odds."
