AFL lower leagues round-up

by Setanta staff , 05 February 2012

Longford and Wexford secured healthy wins in Allianz Division Three on Sunday, while Wicklow put traditional cannon fodder Kilkenny to the sword in Division Four.

It is Longford, who will top the Division Three table after the first round of fixtures after they downed Offaly by 13 points, winning out 2-15 to 0-8. Wexford, meanwhile, scored goals galore as Cavan were dispatched 4-9 to 1-13. It was tighter, however, in Roscommon, for whom a Conor Devaney goal proved the difference in a 1-12 to 0-12 win over Tipperary.

Tomas McCann won a pulsating game for Antrim on Saturday evening. The Saffrons defeated Sligo by 0-13 to 0-12, McCann pointing the winner from all of 50 metres in injury-time as the home team at Casement Park staged a fine comeback.

Meanwhile, London were unable to repeat last year's shock Championship qualifier win over Fermanagh as their Division Four encounter, set for Ruislip on Sunday, was postponed due to snow. A new date for the fixture will be confirmed on Monday.

In the three games that did go ahead Wicklow were, unsurprisingly, the resounding winners as they thumped Kilkenny by 3-25 to 1-1 in Freshford.

Highly-fancied Limerick found it tougher going, with Ian Ryan’s goal crucial in their 1-9 to 0-9 victory in Leitrim. Clare, finally, beat Munster foes Waterford by 1-17 to 0-12.
