Bell dropped as Bresnan returns

by Setanta Staff , 07 February 2012

Ian Bell has been left out of England's one-day squad to play Pakistan but Tim Bresnan returns after recovering from injury.

Bell has been axed after a dreadful showing in the 3-0 Test defeat to the Asians and he will now head home and try to work out his technique against spin ahead of the trip to Sri Lanka.

Uncapped batsman Jos Buttler will replace Bell in the squad, while spinner Danny Briggs is another uncapped star to be brought into the squad.

Bresnan was originally selected for the tour of the UAE but had to fly home after suffering complications with his elbow following surgery.

The Yorkshireman will be given a run-out against the England Lions on Friday to prove his fitness and should go straight back into the starting XI if he comes through unscathed.

Bell's one-day future must now be called into question as he appeared in only one of the five ODIs against India in October, while he only made 51 runs in six innings at an average of 8.50 in the recent Test series.

National selector Geoff Miller feels the squad that has been picked is a good blend of new and old and hopes the players can adapt to the conditions in what is expected to be a tough encounter with Pakistan.

"We have selected two squads that include both experienced international players and younger players who have performed strongly for England Lions in recent months and deserve an opportunity to further test themselves against quality opposition," he said.

"Playing against Pakistan in the UAE will be challenging, but it is important that these players continue to develop their skills so that we are able to make strides in limited-overs cricket, particularly on the subcontinent.
