Flower backs Pietersen to shine

by Setanta Staff , 07 February 2012

England coach Andy Flower has backed Kevin Pietersen to do the business after revealing he will open the batting in the one-dayers.

The 31-year-old has looked woefully out of form on the current trip to the United Arab Emirates and made little impact with the bat in the 3-0 Test defeat to Pakistan.

His troubles against spin were cruelly highlighted once more and there were calls from certain sections of the media for him to be dropped, as his confidence levels are so low.

But Flower has taken the other route and propelled the South African-born star back into the limelight, as he will open up with skipper Alastair Cook in the 50-over contests.

And the former Zimbabwe batsmen believes that the hard-hitting right-hander could play some match-winning innings once he gets a start in the ODIs.

"He's a very, very fine cricketer and someone we'd like to give the option of facing as many balls as possible in the limited-overs game," Flower said.

"If he stays in long enough, he will win games for us in that position."
